Why do shrimp lose color during transport?

During transport, shrimp from the Caridina and Neocaridina genera often lose the intensity of their colors. For those ordering these beautiful creatures for the first time, this can be concerning. However, this process is completely natural and reversible.

Stress as the main reason

The main reason for color loss is transport-related stress. Being confined in a tight bag, lack of natural light, fluctuating temperatures, or vibrations during the journey—all of this causes shrimp to try to “hide,” including by reducing pigment in their shell.

Additionally, in Caridina shrimp, which typically have more delicate coloration, the change can be particularly noticeable. In the case of Neocaridina, although they are often more resilient, color fading also occurs, especially in intensely colored lines.

When do colors return?

After being introduced to the new tank and completing the acclimation process, colors typically return within a few hours to a maximum of 1–2 days. The condition is providing them with stable water parameters, peace, and hiding places.

It’s worth remembering that high-quality food and proper lighting also affect the condition and coloration of shrimp—but first they need to feel safe in their new environment.

Fun fact: Neocaridina Orange Eye

A particularly interesting case is the Neocaridina Orange Eye shrimp. During transport, their eyes often become dark or completely transparent, which can cause concern. However, this is also a stress effect—the orange eyes typically return within a few hours after acclimation is complete and the shrimp have calmed down.

In summary: color loss during transport is a natural defensive reaction of the shrimp’s body. This does not mean the shrimp are sick or of poor quality. Simply give them time and proper conditions, and in a short time they will once again delight the eye with full coloration.
